Debating Society

This academic year of 2014-15 was quite significant for our debating society because its saga was not only limited to the entire city of Delhi but also across the nation. Members of the debating society have indeed built a brand image of the college in the national debating circuit.

Intra-College Debate Competition

The society organised an intra-college debate on 30th September on a very concurrent topic, 'Is Social media breaking or making relations?'. This debate saw huge participations of the students and the winners were Amit Jha,VedantKhandelwal and SiyaRasik respectively while Manmohan Singh & Sarah Hussain were awarded as Best interjectors.Last year, the Debating Society added a new chapter to it, NUKE, a forum for Parliamentary Debate.

Bilingual Inter-College Debate Competition

From this year we started the format of Parliamentary Debating which is regarded as one of the toughest and perhaps the best format of Debating.
On 6th April 2015, thedebating society "The Power of Words" organized a bilingual Inter-College debate competition in which debaters from various colleges of Delhi University have participated. The topic for this inter-college debate was also very concurrent and appreciable' "Is UN failing to maintain Global Peace?" The competition was judged by three eminent personalities: Retd. Major General Ranvir Yadav, Prof. C.P. Singh (Dean, Center of Mass Communication, IP University) and Dr. Sabina Pillai (Associate Professor, Dept.Of English, SBSEC).

Prizes won in Conventional Debating:

  • The team of Abhishek and Ayushi has won first prize at Gandhi Bhawan debate.
  • Amit Jha won the first prize at SBSEC intra college debate and consolation prize at All India Women's Conference Debate.
  • AniketAnand secured 2nd prize in the Kirorimal College NCC Debate and Kalindi College NCC Debate' and 3rd prize at Antardhwani NCC Debate, SBSEC Shrishti fest and Jamia Millia Islamia NCC debate respectively.
  • ApoorvaRajhans got Best Speaker award in Gargi college debate

  • The team of Arushi and Suyash has won as 2nd best team in a national level debate competition''Manthan 2014'.
  • Kumar Kshitij won as 2nd Best Speaker in Teri University Debate.
  • Sarah Hussain had a live debate with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in RashtrapatiBhawan in the presence of Hon'ble President of India on the occassion of National Voter's Day.
  • SiyaRasik secured the 3rd position at SBSEC intra-college debate' best team with Suyash at Delhi College of Arts and Commerce Debate' and best interjector prize at Motilal Nehru College debate in march 2015.
  • Suyash won as 2nd best speaker and 2nd best team in Manthan 2014' 1st prize in Medhavi 2014 in August' Best speaker in Adhiraj Ghosh MenorialDebate' organised by St. Stephen's College in September' 3rd Prize in All India women's Conference Debate in November. In December'he got 2nd prize in the debate organised in our college on the occasion of Good Governance Day. He also won as 3rd best speaker in Gargi college extempore debate, Best interjector at Kalindi College Debate and 1st prize in extempore debate of B.R.Ambedkar College in February. In the month of march' he won Best Speaker award & 2nd best team in Delhi College of Arts and Commerce debate, 3rd prize in debate of 'Uddyam' of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College(morning) and 2nd best speaker in Satyawati College debate. In the month of April, He won as 2nd Best speaker in Dyal Singh Manjistha memorial Debate, organised by Dyal Singh College' he got 3rd prize in debate organised by Women Development Cell of Bharti College and He also won 2nd prize in debate competition organised by Hindi Department of our college.

The Debating Society, under the Convenership of Dr. C.S.Dubey, brought many laurels to the college. The Society organized two intra college competitions on the topics ‘China is a threat for India’. सदनकामतहैंकिचीनभारतकेलिएखतराहैं| and ‘Is media prioritizing monetary benefits over social issues? क्यामीडियाआर्थिकलाभकोसामाजिकमुद्दोसेज्यादाप्राथमिकतादेरहाहै?’

This year students have taken part in plethora of parliamentary debates including the outstation ones. 14 students of the society have taken part in ‘Trivium national parliamentary debate’ organized by Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. I shall like to make a special mention of star debaters’ of the college namely, SuyashVerma, SiyaRasik, Abhishek Pandey, Ankit Anand, Ms. AnkitaOjha, Ms. Vaishnavi Singh, Kumar Kshitij and ShobhitDiwakar who participated in various debate competitions in different colleges of the University of Delhi and won prizes.
